I'm sorry to hear that you guys have had such a headache with American Home Shield, but I have to say I have had lots of good experiences over the past 5 years with them. If you EVER have a problem, talk to your realtor and they can almost always get the problem esculated and problem resolved.

So far..

1 toilet flange (was rotted thru the floor)
3 leaky toilet turnoff valves replaced (2 diff houses)
1 new dishwasher
1 new water heater
work on my dryer and washer

Failures:
was told that the liner / seal was covered on my old fridge by phone rep. The app guy came out and said no go and took my money. I called the office, complained because I explained the problem before hand and they gave me a voucher.

BTW. My Realtor was only involved ONCE. The other times they were more than willing to help out. Also, wait times were never longer than 5-10 minutes with most of them instant.

Don't mess with AHS since they didn't cover my dishwasher, plumbing leak and garage door opener for some stupid excuse. All was suppose to be covered under warranty but never wanted to pay any of the cost. All AHS did was make excuses why it's not covered. Water presure, caulking on the faucet, garage spring was not covered. Very bad customer service and very slow response.

Auto insurance means that a policy is written on a car - not the person. You can be added as a driver to the cars, but you would be covered as a family member either way. Check with your local agent since a few states (TX, NY, etc) have different rules, but even then you would still be covered unless you took it without permission AND they reported it stolen AND pressed charges.
References :
Working in insurance industry for over 10 years

I have seen many people on here say that you are automatically covered when your parents have full coverage, including insurance agents. This is not true of all companies. Call your insurance carrier and ask. It is a lot easier than finding out after an accident that you are not covered.
References :
Take a look at the policy, most policy's will state, no drivers under a certain age, if theirs does, they will have to add you, and pay a premium for you.
References :
No, they have to add you to their policy. If they dont and let you drive their car regularly then it is considered insurance fraud
