Home repair warranty is it worth it?
Sep 28th, 2008 by DougP
I have a old rebublic home warranty that was included when i originally purchased my home. It is about to expire in march and there asking $300 to extend it another year with a $100 per call service charge. Is it advantage to me to purchase the warranty or just put that money ito an emergency fund?
I'd go w/the warranty. I know it sounds like a lot on the service call, but if they were to come back after getting parts there would be no more fee to be paid. As long as whatever it is…plumbing or A/C…isn't neglected the home warranty will cover repairs. Make sure you keep your coil cleaned, that is the first thing that a HVAC looks at when they're called out. If it's dirty, it puts you in denial and you're stuck w/paying to clean it and all the repairs….that can get costly!

Yes. Unless your good at home repair yourself. What does it cover? Furnace? Pipes? Electric? or just the house?

depends on the age of your house and the fixtures that it covers I personally would put the 400 in the bank after a couple of lucky years it would add up also would it replace or repair an item will determine the value of the warranty also the biggest thing is could you afford to pay to have something fixed if you had to

I had a similar warranty, but it was not worth it. They would only let me use plumbers, electricians, and HVAC people they had in their list of contractors. I could not just call up anyone in the phone book for a service call. If your warranty is this way, I can honestly say it is not worth the hassle.

I worked at an HVAC company and home warranties were a pain. The warranty companies wanted us to document everything wrong and even use their used parts for our repairs. We refused and they got mad (as did the homeowner because he coudn't get a repair). Even if the AC unit was old and rusted, they would want it repaired instead of replaced. I say no on the home warranty. You are better off finding people in the phone book and BBB to give you better service.

No, what it would cost for the service call and warranty would pay for the first couple of calls, put the money into an emergency fund, that what an emergency fund is used for.

I would pay the warranty you could have a major problem with heating or air conditioning that could cost you thousands
